Safely Bending Threaded Rod
Threaded rod doesn’t always get used with it’s tensile load, sometimes you may need to bend threaded rod for your requirement. Depending on your use-case I can suggest you look at U-bolts, are they suited to your requirement? When you bend a threaded rod, you cannot assume it will keep its original properties. If a threaded rod is used for installation suspension, it should normally only be subjected to tensile load. If the threaded rod is subjected to a transverse load, it must not be higher than the steel is still within its elastic range.
How Do You Bend Threaded Rod?
Step 1:
To bend a threaded rod, you first need to put your desired length of threaded rod into a vice. Tightly secure the rod into place and with a marker or piece of chalk, mark where you’d like your bend to be.
Step 2:
With your propane torch, heat the area surrounding your marking until it’s red hot.
Step 3:
Bend the threaded rod to your desired shape, or angle. You may need to reheat and rebend the bar until it’s in its final form. Let the bar cool down naturally otherwise you may weaken the strength of the threaded rod.
Does Bending Threaded Rod Weaken It?
Yes, bending threaded rod does weaken it. When you bend a threaded rod, you cannot assume it will keep its original properties. If a threaded rod is used for installation suspension, it should normally only be subjected to tensile load. If the threaded rod is subjected to a transverse load, it must not be higher than the steel is still within its elastic range.
